Australian Meat Pies

When you travel to another country, one way to experience their culture is through food. We really want to find authentic Australian cuisine, but there is such an English, Asian, and Indian influence it’s quite hard to do. What we have discovered is a few items that are considered true Australian: BBQ Prawns, Vegemite, Roo (short for Kangaroo), Crocodile and Meat Pies. It is hard to put meat pies in this category for me since the English have a version of this, but it is still a big Australian thing here. So, we have been on a quest to find a good Australian meat pie. Right across from the Powerhouse is Hannah’s Hot Pies. We decided to purchase one and share – so glad we did. The shape reminds me a lot of our frozen pot pies back home. Now we did not order the “usual” – well at least from what was considered to be the norm at this pie stand – which consisted of mashed potatoes, mashed peas, and BBQ sauce on top. Being newbies, we thought we would start with the basics. At first bite, the taste was reminiscent of… a frozen pot pie, until my second bite which tasted like Dinty Moore’s beef stew with an enormous amount of pepper. Scott and I could hardly finish the one. The small size is deceiving. Now, this was our first try, and plan on sampling other meat pies for further research (I am going to gain weight!). We will let you know if this is was indeed what an Aussie pie should taste like. Cheers!
