The temperature for the month of October dictates when you can carve your orange veggie. If it is cool or cold, carving it early in the month should be just fine. But please keep in mind, we live in FLORIDA. If it is warm, waiting a week before Halloween would be the best bet. Yet, you still have the possibility of a rotten, moldy Jack-o-lantern before Trick or Treating. If the weather is HOT, forget it. You’ve got three options: 1. Buy a fake pumpkin to carve. Not only can you create this on October 1st, but it’s good for the next several Halloweens to come. 2. Carve your pumpkin the day before the 31st. and 3. Use the Mr. Potato Head approach. Wal-Mart carries plastic eyes, noses, ears and eyes to create a spooky, silly Mr. Jack-o-lantern Head in minutes. Ours lasted for over three weeks without spoiling.

We are definitely taking this approach next year. Carving pumpkins is not very much fun...for anyone! Although knowing my girls we'll have to add glitter, and sparkles and sequins :)
