I got a great question from Sean wondering why, when Australia’s flag is red, white & blue, do all of the athlete wear green and yellow as their colors. I thought I would post the answer on the blog in case anyone else out there watching the Olympics wanted to know as well. Thanks, Sean for asking!
It all started with a combination of the flag colors with the gold and green when Australia’s cricket team toured England in 1899. The Australian Olympic team wore the gold and green colors for the first time in 1908. And their rugby team followed suit in 1928. It was a popular choice since the colors represent their national flower, the Golden Wattle. BUT it was not until 1984 when it was officially declared Australia’s national sports color. Other countries that use colors other than their nation’s flag are: New Zealand (Black), Netherlands (Orange), and India (Blue).

The Golden Waddle: It is a small tree which flowers in late winter and spring, producing a mass of fragrant, fluffy, golden flowers. September 1st is National Wattle Day. Interesting... that's in about two and a half weeks. I'll have to do a follow up report. ;-)
