Winter Haven Baton State Championship - Day 1 – Individual Competition

The wonderful world of twirl is so new to us. This was Morgan’s first time entering for individual competition. All I had to go on for what to expect was from what I saw at the Florida State Fairgrounds last month, and we only stayed for the team competition. I get so nervous driving to new places, and this morning was no different. I thought for sure my GPS was broken after it leads me straight into a subdivision, but low and behold – Polk State Community College was lurking behind it all. I will never forget walking into the gym and seeing girls everywhere in evening/prom gowns. Morgan could not focus. She was so enamored by it all – the glitz, the rhinestones and the makeup. Not knowing when our first event would be, I quickly maneuvered the twirl girl into the bathroom where I yanked – oops, I mean took out sponge rollers from her hair. Makeup was another challenge since I could not get her to look straight at me. She did not want to miss the big girls getting ready. I still do not know how I managed to get her dressed and ready to go – tights and all – in a crowded bathroom. With all the hairspray and arms flying, I’m surprised no one got hurt AND everyone was courteous. Her events were: 1. State Strut Queen Pageant which involved three categories: Modeling, Basic Strut and Military Strut and then each event separately 2. Modeling 3. Basic Strut and 4. Military. The video below will show exactly what goes on with each event for those who are not familiar with baton lingo. (BTW – I’m still learning!)

There was one girl (see photo below - She is in front of Morgan) who we thought was just so cute – had to be three or four years old… until we asked the child’s mother how old she really was – Are you ready? She is SEVEN years old! And she was pretty good – in fact, she won every category. Yet despite the ringer (This division is for 0 – 6 year olds, and your age placement is determined by your birthday, so Morgan will be a ringer next year! LOL!), Morgan and her team mates did very well with all of them placing either second or third. The best way to describe how the day went was a lot of waiting and hurrying. I didn’t mind it, but was very curious as to how Morgan was going to handle the day. My daughter is hooked! I was very proud of her and all of her teammates! They all did an amazing job! We got home around five this evening instead of an hour earlier due to my GPS not recognizing a new road. But we had enough time to relax and get ready for tomorrow's team competition – Go Sundancers!

Ack, how do you handle the pressure?! The hair, the makeup, the waiting, the watching. I'm a nervous wreck just thinking about it!

Glad she loved it.
