I first want to say before I explain further about today’s individual baton competition that no way am I referring to the event itself.
In fact, this was THE best organized one of the season and I promise I am not just saying that since our baton coaches plan and execute the whole thing.
They added so many special touches to make the event one that no twirling girl OR boy could miss. (Yes, there was one guy competing as well at the ripe young age of 25).
With their systematic scheduling, the day went smoothly and efficient.
No, Miss Major Pain is in reference to our twirl girl.
She was out of control.
I think the past competitions went to her head, and felt as if she did not need to really try.
Please understand and don’t get me wrong – the main goal is for Morgan to have fun BUT she still has to do her best, and that was not the case.
For example, she would not focus, kept talking to fellow twirlers while they were in the middle of being judged, and was very sloppy with all of her routines.
She had done much better in the past two competitions than today and made mistakes on simple techniques.
Even though I was trying to explain of her need to turn it around, it did not start to hit Morgan of her poor performance until when we checked one of the events and she didn’t even place.
She was shocked and upset.
By this time it was too late.
Most of the events had past and we now just had to wait for the results.
Her placement clearly reflected the amount of effort she put into each baton category.
The last result of the day was the biggie – The Miss Sunshine State P

ageant.
This includes a modeling, basic strut and a solo.
There were only three contestants, one of which was the girl who looks to be four but is actually seven.
I knew before they even announced the winners Morgan had placed third.
Both of the other girls had put in their all and had deserved the right to be there.
Of course, our twirler was thrilled and elated to have another trophy and get to stand on a podium while hundreds of people cheered for them.
Not seconds after Morgan walked off the gym floor did she run up to some girls saying with a smug voice, “Look what I got!
I got third place!” OK, OK – I know she was excited, but with what happened today, with her know-it-all-diva attitude, I lost it.
I quickly said (out loud for everyone to hear) “I would not be so proud to announce winning LAST place!!”
Yes, I did say it and I’m sure to the large crowd around us I was quickly labeled a stage mom.
But I promise that was not the case.
I would have been so proud of her if she had done her best and did not place in anything than to have her receive the awards she did today.
I had talks with her throughout the competition, but after what she said, Morgan got an earful starting as we left the gym, the car ride home and ending when I tucked her in bed.
I let her know that I would be proud of her no matter what as long as she always did her best and I expected an attitude change for tomorrow.
I also asked her if she was unhappy with twirling and wanted to stop after the season.
I had a strong feeling after my four hour rampage regarding her efforts today that they answer would be yes… but it was not.
We will see if this rings true for tomorrow.
