Day One - Wellington

With only an e-mail and web-site pick up instructions, we did not want to miss our tour. Breakfast needed to be fast and furious. Never mind it’s unhealthy contribution to our society, but there is something so comforting when your homesick eyes recognizes the golden arches. We had plenty of time and arrived at our pick up point with time to spare. Each vehicle approaching got our attention, hoping it was our ride. And yes, it did arrive. Ted from Adventure Safari was our tour guide. The kids were immediately thrilled with him. You see, he looked very familiar to one of the actors from an Aussie preschool show. Mason and Morgan felt as if they already knew him. It was a small group – just our family and Twyla, a school teacher from Canada. After short introductions and an explanation of what to expect, we were off!

Our first movie location was not so impressive, but was expected. It is so amazing how film makers can create something out of nothing. Below is a photo of an industrial area parking lot, where three separate scenes were shot most I believe were when the hobbits had to battle in murky pond water. Unfortunately I cannot recall exactly which scenes. I am sure Scott can elaborate on what I have missed.

Before setting off to the next location, we stopped at a local gas station with a Subway to order our lunch. Subway is MASSIVE in New Zealand. They are like Starbucks – one on every corner. And another wonderful familiar sight to see. I couldn’t resist taking a photo of Scott and Twyla ordering sandwiches. I thought for sure no one was looking, but as you can see I was caught.
